If I believe in science, how can I believe in God?

It is becoming ever increasingly popular to trust science as a saving hope for all mankind. Many claim that they have put their hope in science because they believe in facts, not faith. However, faith is an inescapable part of everyday life: if you believe in something, it's because you've made a choice to believe it, and you've made that choice because you trust the source - regardless of whether it is science or God.

"Jesus is the Christ...by believing you may have life in His name."(John 20:31)

In 1912, Charles Dawson came forward with a discovery that was hailed as the Darwin's 'missing link', an ape-man skull (Piltdown Man), which helped scientists bring evolution from the fringes of theory to the mainstream of assumed truth... until 1953, when it was conclusively exposed as a forgery - a very elaborate and convincing hoax! In 1999, it happened again, a fossil smuggled out of China was triumphantly displayed at the National Geographic Society and Paleontologists were boastfully thrilled until it was later proven to be another hoax!

You see, the first problem with trusting the word of men over the word of God, is that all humans are flawed and therefore prone to making mistakes. The second problem is that all humans have their own agenda, and scientists must produce certain results that please others, in order to acquire funding and tenure (Oh, and let us not forget that ego greatly influences a person's ability to be objective). The historical giants who laid a foundation for modern science are often household names that evolved into larger-than-life personas, and although their intelligence is well documented, so are their flaws. The biggest names in science history, including Einstein, Darwin, Galileo, Pauling, and Aristotle, staked their life and reputation on theories that were later proven false. Consider Sigmund Freud, at one time revered as a genius and an unquestionable source, yet now his ideas are largely considered foolish.

"Your faith should not rest on the wisdom of man, but on the power of God."(1 Cor 2:5)

Science doesn't create anything...it only attempts to explain and harness that which already exists...that which was already created. In that sense, science can certainly be compatible with faith in God. However, it is because of pride, that the majority of the science community has refused to even acknowledge God's existence, else they would have to give the glory to Him. It is certainly no coincidence that the very first sin, the fall of mankind, and our broken world, all started with this idea that man could acquire enough knowledge to be his own God.

"You won't die!" the serpent replied to the woman. "God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil." (Gen 3:4-5)

The arrogance of scientists is baffling when you consider that they have no answers for, and no hope of solving, the most obvious and most pressing problem facing all humanity - death! We should all be thankful that science has been given enough understanding to remove a faulty appendix, but they will never be able to remove things like murder, adultery, and selfishness from a man's soul. They can set a broken bone but they will never be able to heal a broken heart of despair and loneliness. These things are out of the reach of scientists because they are spiritual problems.

"The natural man does not accept things that come from the Spirit of God. They are foolishness to him, he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Cor 2:14)

If you are going to put your faith in science, then you are in the unfortunate position of deciding which scientist to believe. Doing a search on any scientific subject soon reveals that there are always conflicting studies. Few things have been as thoroughly researched, over the last 50 years, as vitamins, and yet there is nothing but reams and reams and reams of conflicting information - and, to this day, nobody can give a definitive answer as to whether the multi-billion dollar vitamin industry is making people healthier or just poorer. In the early days of medical science, people were induced to ingest unfathomable things in the name of scientific medicine, such as, kerosene, arsenic, mercury and lead. Children were given cocaine for toothaches and people were encouraged to smoke raw opium. People blindly trusted doctors who performed horrifyingly unsound practices on their loved ones in the name of science, such as, electroshock, bloodletting, trepanations (skull drilling), and crude lobotomies. So much of what was once trusted as science, eventually was revealed to be garbage! Here are just a few examples of theories that were once considered genuine and sound, but are now only the stuff of laboratory jokes: expanding earth theory, phlogiston theory, planet Vulcan, the mars canals, luminiferous, aether, phrenology, static universe theory, physiognomy, maternal impressions, geocentric universe, wandering womb, four humors theory, alchemy and miasmatic theory of disease.

The object of these examples is not to condemn science, but to condemn arrogance in the scientific community, which has led many to believe that anything labeled as science can be assumed safe, honest, and infallible. Often, it is not ignorance, but arrogance that causes men to believe their own inaccuracies. And it is this arrogance, above all else, that keeps men from knowing God!

"The fool says in his heart, there is no God." (Psalms 14:1)

Many believe that because knowledge has increased in the earth, that science is somehow becoming more perfect. However, plenty of scientific errors have appeared in the headlines of recent history, such as scientists encouraging the rampant use of DDT, before eventually deciding it was one of the most toxic chemicals ever produced. Thalidomide was used on Pregnant mothers for many years, until they realized it was resulting in tens of thousands of birth defects. Just last year, 75 scientist working in a lab, in Atlanta, Georgia, were exposed to deadly bacteria, when scientists from the Center for Disease control inadvertently sent them a box of live bacteria. Carl Sagan, one of the most celebrated astronomers in history wrote a jarring research article in 'science' journal in 1988, but when later challenged in 1990, admitted that his data was incorrect and therefore, their entire theory was false. Scientist touted fen-Phen as the great problem solver for obesity, until years later they discovered that it caused irreversible heart damage for millions. Scientists said that silicone breast implants were safe, then they said they were dangerous enough that scores of women had them surgically removed, then they once again decided that they were safe...now, they aren't sure! Nuclear scientists who built Russia's Chernobyl Nuclear Plant bragged for years about how safe it was, until they made a series of careless mistakes while testing the reactor, which resulted in 4,300 dead and 70,000 permanently disabled. Perhaps one could take comfort in thinking that this was a freak isolated event, except that it happened again 25 years latter at Fukushima, when overconfident scientist miscalculated the importance of certain safety features. Then you add the element of oversensationalized entertainment media to the mix, and you end up with millions of people being educated with a daily dose of psuedo-science and talk show drama from figures like Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil. Scores of people base their beliefs on what they've heard from guys like Bill Nye, who has used TV fame, instead of published research papers, to position himself as an outspoken representative for the science community. He left his job as an engineer at Boeing Corp to pursue a career in TV comedy, and later stared as the front man in a childrens show bearing his now famous moniker, "The Science Guy". Apparently he has fallen victim to his own celebrity hype, and his disturbingly ultra humanistic views on subjects such as eugenics and population control tend to make even worldly people nervous. Bill is a good example of how public perception can grow legs and suddenly take on a life of it's own in the science community, regardless of how false that perception is: Bill has never earned any advanced science degrees, but He has 6 of them that were presented as gifts, all Honorary Doctorates from different universities, further purpetuating a persona of credibility with hand shakes and worthless pieces of paper.

What's even more telling, is that not all false information disseminated by the scientific community is by mistake, here are just a few examples of well respected scientist that have been caught falsifying their research data for personal gain, just in the last ten years (after the damage was already done): Harvard researcher John Darsee was caught faking data, including 100 published studies; famed scientist William McBride found guilty of altering data on medical research; Robert Slutsky caught fabricating data for his research articles and often used his reputation to convince other well known scientists to include their names on his papers without ever checking his work; respected chemists, Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann heaped a lot of glory on themselves as the scientists who had solved the worlds energy problem with 'cold fusion', until it came down to demands for actual data, which they didn't have. And the best of all...whole teams of scientists who are on the payroll of major tobacco companies, have all testified under oath, that no link between disease and tobacco use has been found in their research!

We should all explore and celebrate God's creation, but we should humble ourselves and give Him the proper glory. We should put our trust in what we know about the creator, not the creation. Always remember, science is a matter of the head, God's love is a matter of the heart! Scientists will go to the ends of the universe to look for rock samples, but they won't search their own hearts for sin. Those who have trusted science, will all someday go into the grave, their knowledge will go with them, and it will be of no value!

"Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and don't lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your paths straight." (Prov 3:5-6)
