How do I learn to hear God more clearly?

Good communication with God comes from an intimate relationship (Jer 29:12-13). Therefore, the more you know Him, the more you will know His voice, His personality, and His ways. Jesus Christ said:

"My sheep know my voice; I know them and they follow me." (Jn 10:27)

Two things are critical to hearing God:

1) Renounce the sin in your life and pursue holiness. Sin shuts God out of your life (Is 59:2), blinds you to the truth (2 Cor 4:4, Jn 12:40, Ezek 12:2), and hardens your heart (Heb 3:7-8). The harder a person's heart is, more difficult it is to be sensitive to God's voice and presence (Heb 3:15, Matt 13:15, Eph 4:17-19). Consistant obedience will improve your spiritual hearing, but the more you disobey, the more difficult it becomes to hear!

"Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves." (James 1:22, Heb 3:7)

2) Spend time with Him. It's like any other relationship - the more you spend time with someone, the more you get to know them and recognize their voice. Removing sin from your life and spending time with Jesus go hand-in-hand. It's only by His power that you can walk away from sin and stay away (Rom 13:14, Titus 2:11-12), and it's only by prayer that you hear His voice, know His will, and recieve His power. Most believers have very little overcoming power in their life due to their inadequate prayer habits - you cannot live beyond your prayer life! In this modern age, it does not come natural for humans to be still and quiet their soul , it's something you must make a priority and cultivate (Ps 46:10).
