How do faith, hope, and love work together?

Faith, hope and love are the foundational, essential abiding fruits of the Holy Spirit in a relationship with the Lord. Even though all three of these work in cooperation with each other, love is the greatest because it is the reason (source) for all of the others.

"Faith, hope, and love, these three remain; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor 13:13)

Knowing that God loves you, gives you reason to have hope. God's love answers the question of, "why would God answer my prayers and do good things for me?"

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son... " (John 3:16)

Hope is when you desire for something to happen, accompanied with expectation. The expectation is what makes it different from just wishing.

"...hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he can already see? But, if we hope for what we do not yet see, we wait for it patiently." (Rom 8:24-25)

Faith in Jesus Christ is what gives you the assurance, that the thing you are hoping for will not disappoint... because, you are trusting God to use His resources to accomplish it, instead of trusting in yourself, other humans, natural elements, or random chance. When trusting Father for the results, you can have a deep sense of peaceful confidence, a conviction that your hope is a sure thing even when you don't see any evidence of it yet!

"Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. " (Heb 11:1)

Without faith it is impossible to please God because faith is believing that God is the source and He is generous. In other words: You must believe that He is able and willing to meet your every need! Your faith should rest upon who God is as a person.

"Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him." (Heb 11:6)

It looks like this:

You want to be a better person with a better life: (Hope)

You believe Jesus can and will supply that better life: (Faith)

Because Jesus is your source, you place utmost value on Him: (Love)

FEAR tries to undermine LOVE

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear..." (1 Jn 4:18)

DISPAIR tries to undermine HOPE

"I would have dispared unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD." (PS 27:13-14)

UNBELIEF tries to undermine FAITH

"And Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will happen" (Matt21:21)
